On a sunny morning, the air still fresh and the birds chirping, I set off on a very special mission. My vehicle this time wasn't my car, but my cargo bike. Why? Because our photo studio in Munich was not far away and the equipment for Outdoor photo shoots It fit perfectly. Cycling through the city on my cargo bike was a fun little change of pace and underscored how flexible we are at Photogenika – even when the weather sometimes throws a wrench in the works.
The A and O: The perfect light and a lot of nonsense
Working as a kindergarten photographer is highly dependent on the weather, as we at Photogenika love taking photos outdoors. Kindergarten gardens offer a wonderful, natural backdrop. But even on cloudy days, we always find a way to make the children smile. Trust is everything. The little ones are often shy at first, but my secret weapon is quite simple: making silly noises! With a question like "Does your daddy have smelly cheese feet?" or a few funny fart noises, the initial skepticism quickly disappears. It is heartwarming to see how the children react, first hesitantly, then full of joy, and finally with genuine, loud laughter. This authentic laughter is what we strive for in our children photos want to hold on to.
The magic of collaboration
Smooth collaboration with the teachers is crucial. Everything went perfectly at this kindergarten. The teachers brought the children to us one at a time, so we could take photos without long waits. This support is invaluable. Sometimes, at other facilities, we even pick up and drop off the children ourselves. We know that the shortage of staff in many kindergartens is a major challenge and we try to make the process as uncomplicated as possible. That's why we often come in pairs and are flexible when it comes to the schedule.
Challenges and heartwarming moments
Unfortunately, some children are sick on a photo day, with glazed eyes and colds. You wonder why they can't just stay in bed. These children are the biggest challenge. But even if they're actually far too tired to smile, I try with all my experience to coax a small, genuine smile out of them. On this day, I succeeded in doing so with a little girl. This moment, this timid yet honest smile, was incredibly heartwarming. It's precisely these moments that make my work so meaningful. Another moment was surprising and organizationally tricky: A child was introduced to me by the wrong name. Fortunately, the error was quickly discovered before it could cause major problems – because when organizing kindergarten photo shoots, which we manage with an online shop for parents, every name is crucial.
