Learning wedding photography: My first assignment as a trainee at Photogenika

Every photographer probably remembers their first big assignment, the moment when theory meets unpredictable reality. As a photography apprentice at Photogenika in Munich, I was eagerly awaiting this day: my very first Wedding accompaniment! It was more than just a chance to get a taste of the practical side of things; it was the opportunity to be there for one of the most emotional days in two people's lives. But how does it feel to bear this responsibility when every magical moment is unrepeatable?

The first step: A special invitation & my thoughts

The request came from Barbara, a experienced photographer here at PhotogenikaShe asked me if I wanted to accompany her to a wedding - not as a paid assistant, but to listen and learn. I happily agreed straight away and started to think about it. What would it be like in reality? In theory, accompanying someone on such an important day always sounds great and easy, full of joy and romance. But is it like that as a photographer? Looking back, I can say: Yes, it might be a bit stressful and you definitely feel the responsibility that lies with you. The insidious thing about unique moments is that they are unique and cannot be repeated easily. But nevertheless, it is incredibly beautiful and moving to be able to accompany such a moment.

The day before the wedding, we sat down together again and discussed in detail what to expect. Where we would meet, how the wedding would proceed, and what the process would look like for us photographers. Barbara explained where she would like me to be at which moments and, most importantly, that I shouldn't stand or walk in her way. I should definitely capture beautiful moments that I notice and be able to support her by photographing them from a second perspective – but not stand in her way. And that's not as easy as it sounds the first time! 🙂

Day 1: Emotions at the registry office

When the big day arrived, we met well in advance. We prepared our equipment, received final instructions, and then we got started. The bride and groom arrived, and we were immediately on the job.

the civil wedding The ceremony took place in a medium-sized room, so it wasn't easy to stay out of the way. But with a little sensitivity, frequent eye contact, and small hand signals, it worked perfectly. I was able to take a few photos during the congratulations and the champagne reception, thus gathering some important first impressions. After the portraits, where I assisted Barbara, the first part, or rather the first day, was already over.

Day 2: Location, First Look & Free Wedding Ceremony

The second day started early in the morning. We met directly at the wedding locationThere, we immediately began with the location photos. I learned a lot here, as Barbara was able to explain and show me a lot of things, and I was able to try them out right away. Afterwards, we looked around to see which spots would be suitable for the portraits. The location, a courtyard that was used as Event location for the wedding was a beautiful setting with many possibilities.

Then the groom and his best man arrived. Ready for the first look with the bride, it was time to get started, and an exciting day began. After I was able to photograph the first look from a second perspective, Barbara took over the portraits on her own, and I assisted her.

The Free wedding The ceremony took place in a rather cramped wedding hall. Due to the space, there wasn't much room to move around. However, it was an excellent opportunity to observe the entire wedding party and photograph the guests from a second perspective.

My learnings & impressions as a trainee

After wedding it went over to Champagne reception with Coffee and cake, where I was able to take lots of photos. The afternoon flew by. Not to be forgotten: a few Detailed shots of the rings and the bridal bouquet. Both group photos I was there to lend Barbara a helping hand again.

After the group photos, the day ended for us as well. The wedding party moved on to the Party part of the evening, and we packed our things and went home with lots of new impressions for me and an incredible number of photos.

After the project was completed, Barbara and I sat down for a detailed debriefing, during which she gave me feedback and even more tips and tricks.

Conclusion: More than just a taste

In conclusion, it was a wonderful experience, and one where I learned an incredible amount as an apprentice at Photogenika. The mix of challenges and emotional moments really impressed me. I'm grateful for this opportunity and am already looking forward to the next wedding I'll be able to attend!
