Photographer training: A day at vocational school with Sara
Hello!
My name is Sara. I am currently training to be a photographer, which I am doing at Photogenica I'm doing this. Vocational school is also part of the apprenticeship – and that's exactly what I'd like to tell you a little more about today. So, I'll take you along on a typical day at vocational school!
Our school day starts at 8:45 a.m. Today we're starting right away with our subject lessons. This morning we're talking about different photographers and their work. It's incredibly interesting to see how differently photography can be interpreted – sometimes technically perfect, sometimes totally experimental or emotional. We discuss styles, techniques, and the messages conveyed by images a lot in class, which really makes the lessons come alive.
After that, we have German. It might sound like standard class, but it's actually quite helpful – especially when it comes to writing for our portfolios or presentations. For example, we practice how to describe our work well or how to speak confidently in front of the class. After that, we have society and history on the schedule. There's a lot of discussion there too – sometimes about current events, sometimes about historical events that still influence art and media today.
Around 12:15 pm it's finally lunchtime! Some of my classmates and I usually grab something from the bakery or a small shop nearby. While we eat, we chat about class or just about anything else that's going on.
After the break, things get creative in the vocational school Next: We're preparing for a visit to two exhibitions this afternoon. Our teacher explains beforehand which artists are exhibiting and what we should pay attention to during our visit. At 2:00 p.m., we set off together. At the exhibitions, we examine the works closely, analyze them a bit – and, of course, let ourselves be inspired for our own projects. Often, this also sparks new ideas for later work.
Our school day ends at 3:15 pm – full of new impressions, discussions, and many creative impulses. A day at vocational school is truly varied and helps me progress every time – both professionally and personally.
