Your book, your face: Why trust is so important in author photos
You've planned a big project – perhaps even, like my client recently, the release of the German edition of your own book. You know you need those professional author photos that portray you as approachable and likeable. But who do you ultimately trust to choose them? Your own taste? Or the marketing agency, which often has completely different ideas? It's precisely at this point that a photo shoot becomes more than just a technical exercise – it becomes a matter of genuine trust.
The mission: To reinterpret the familiar.
When a client is already familiar with the studio's processes, it creates a very efficient working basis. Since he was already familiar with our quality and working methods from the recordings for the English book edition, we were able to skip the traditional "warm-up phase" and get straight to work.
His preparation was exemplary: He opted for simple beige and classic black. This combination exudes just the right calm in author portraits, without distracting from the face with patterns or garish colors. Our goal was clearly defined: to maintain the established style but to subtly refine it for the German market.
If the pose isn't right – have the courage to leave a gap.
Even with the best planning, a photographer has to remain flexible. We had a specific pose in mind – him sitting on the ground, me photographing from above over his shoulder. In our minds, it looked dynamic, but in reality, it quickly appeared contrived and didn't achieve the desired look.
Instead of clinging rigidly to the original idea, we simply reversed the situation. He sat cross-legged facing the camera, relaxed his posture, and suddenly there was precisely the approachable, friendly quality we had been looking for. An open smile, a comfortable knit sweater against a warm wall texture – the image instantly radiated authenticity. It's about adapting the shoot to the person, not the other way around. This significantly reduces stress for the client and also increases their comfort level.
The moment of truth
Perhaps the most important moment, however, came after the photo shoot: during the image selection on the screen. My client openly told me that his marketing firm often doesn't fully trust his personal taste and frequently ends up choosing images he wouldn't have even favored himself. Therefore, he placed great value on my professional assessment.
For me, that's a huge compliment. His marketing firm doesn't entirely trust his own taste, so he relied heavily on my opinion. This combination of his clear vision and my external perspective efficiently led us to a selection that not only works strategically but that he's also comfortable with.
I knew he was satisfied too, so I went home with a good feeling and in a great mood. We want to give you that same sense of security. Here you'll find...
